Why "High Yellow Curlz"

The term "High Yellow" has so much history.  From being a term referring to "class" or mulattos during slavery to being a term to tease people for being a light skinned African American for being too light or "snobbish". To each person it could mean something different. Not at all is the title of our blog meant to say we only feature light skinned girls or girls with curlz. But we are two "high yellow" girls with curlz.

The history of the term, as I'm familiar with it, the tern refers to people who are very (aka high) light skinned (or having yellow undertones in their skin as opposed to brown). It referred to those who were so light some could pass for white and would also make sure their hair was always straight.
(Like the 1960's movie "High Yellow about a 17-year-old, light-skinned black girl, tries to pass off as white) That is something we are not doing... We are two women embracing our natural hair and all it has to offer. Yes sometimes we may add weave, wear a wig or straighten our own hair but that does not take away from who we are or define us.

So that's for "high yellow"... Now what about Curlz? Well every "natural hair" woman has curly hair.  We all have a particular curl pattern. Whether or not you hair waves, has loose spiral curls, coils, or tight curls that barely appear to "curl" at all. You have curlz, not "naps." Your hair is nappy, wake it up!

The name is meant to open a dialogue about terms and a conversation about the words we use to describe our selves.. skin and hair included.
So lets talk about it & love it.
